For his 100th film, Yutaka “Mr Pink” Ikejima decided to shoot a movie that functions as a retrospective of his career, in a production that earned him the Best Picture Award by PG magazine’s “Pink Awards”. At the same time, it initiated a fan-based movement of Ikejima followers, known as the “The Muse Syndrome,” making it one of his most significant works.

Takashima is a director, who, as he lies on his deathbed reminisces about his life, through the concept of the “muse” who has the form of a young girl appearing on a beach, while he tries to reach her. His memories are presented in three timeframes: First comes his latest period, when his assistant director has an affair with his wife, a protagonist in his pink films, and is about to abandon him in order to become a director by himself. The second depicts the beginning of his career, when he was trying (largely unsuccessfully) to become a theatre actor and then a pink film actor, again experiencing heartbreak from a woman. The third has him at his prime, when he directed his first film, and explains the presence of the girl on the beach.

Ikejima directs a film about filmmaking, starting with the introduction, which features the words of Samuel Fuller: “Film is a battleground. It is love, hate, violence, action and death. In a word, it is emotion”. The whole story seems to revolve around this phrase, as Takashima is a man that faced too many hardships in order to achieve his goal of becoming a director, and his blights continued until the end of his life. However, the ending of the film actually gives an optimistic perspective, despite the permeating drama that characterizes the production, through the words of Eric Rohmer: “Even if films are harsh, cruel, or full of death, I follow Renoir and believe in optimistic movies.”

“The Muse” also functions as a kind of documentary about the pink film industry, as it presents what happens behind the cameras in with realism. Furthermore, the artistry and the attention given to the cinematography are quite obvious, particularly in the scenes in the beach where Shoji Shimizu implements some impressive long shots, highlighting the beauty of the scenery.

Of course, this is a pink film, and in that fashion, the sex scenes play an important part, although not as significant as in other pink productions, since the focus here is on the general concept of movies. However, almost all of them are quite sensual, and benefit the most by the female actresses, all of which are very sexy and in different styles of appearance. The one where Riri Koda, who plays Takashima’s current wife, gives a hand job to his assistant director, and the ones with Yuria Hidaka, who plays the “Muse” are the ones that stand out.

The acting in general is on a very high level, with Koji Makamura giving a great dramatic performance in the first and last segment, and Naoyuki Chiba in the middle one, highlighting his character’s frustration and determination as young Takashima.

“The Muse” is a great, not just pink, but overall film, which highlights the abilities of the directors in the genre in the most impressive fashion.

J-Girl Yummy is proud to bring you the highest quality and sexiest girls in the most beautiful settings, wearing the least amount of clothes. In this gravure (tease) video you will meet Japanese model and adult actress Noa Eikawa. She is a friendly and charming girl who just turned 20 years old. We wanted to get her naked in many different settings so we took her to Amami-Oshima Island, away from Tokyo. She was able to let herself go in nature and she really expresses herself. Noa looks great in a bikini and she has so much fun on the beach. After a while, the clothing starts getting in the way, so she gets fully naked for your viewing pleasure. She looks very innocent and pure, but wait till she warms up a bit… she has a very naughty side that you will love.

In Search of Pink Eiga

0

Pink cinema in Japan not only is about the immensely diverse films they produce, but also the manner in which people watch them.  Although there are fewer of them today, theaters showing Pink films used to be abundant, and this article from Dan Asenlund of Metropolis Japan gives us a peek into these rare establishments.

Dusk is quickly settling in Ueno Park as I take a detour around Shinobazu Pond. It’s chilly, and the first snowflakes of the year are slowly melting on the faded lotus leaves. Even Buddhist goddess Benten seems to be freezing inside her temple, having closed her door for the night. I try to locate the phallic statue rumored in the writings of Donald Richie to be hidden somewhere in the vicinities, finding it fitting for my first destination: the Ueno Okura Theater, former home of the once blossoming pinku eiga, or Japanese erotic cinema, industry.

Yukari Ishii, Laputa owner

Yukari Ishii, Laputa manager

The genre had its beginnings with independent studios in the 1960s and often went by the name eroductions.  It wasn’t until competition from television and American films grew stiffer in the early 1970s that pinku eiga took on its most iconic aesthetic in the shape of Nikkatsu’s Roman Porno and Toei’s Pinky Violence series. Both had high production values, elaborate storylines and strong female characters, thus distinguishing themselves from erotic cinema of other countries. Respected directors such as Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Koji Wakamatsu had their beginnings in the genre and films were churned out at a great pace, resulting in hundreds of special theaters springing up in urban centers all over the country—eight in Ueno alone. Then came the video boom with its totally different kind of erotic films, and the theaters disappeared one by one. Today less than a handful remain in Tokyo, but Okura still stands.

Inside LaputaHaving never visited Okura before, I’ve been warned by friends and colleagues to avoid the second floor. Quizzed why, they all responded with a smirk, and as I see stairs leading up to the second floor I can’t help but wonder what lies beyond. But first, I enter the theater and am met by a friendly proprietor who points me to the kind of ticket machine you find at noodle shops. ¥1,600 buys you a ticket with which you are free to leave and re-enter throughout the day and night (it stays open until early morning). The Okura screens three features daily, often produced by parent company Okura Pictures, and the same program is repeated for two weeks until it is replaced by another set of films. I arrive just in time for SEX Laboratory: Moaning Ripe Vixen.

A raunchy, damp stench invades my nostrils as I enter the sparsely filled, but rather cozy and modern, theater and take a seat in an empty row. A quick scan reveals mostly older men, some alone and others in pairs. I spot only one woman. The film and its excuse for a story is silly, lacking the charm of Toei pinky violence and the elaborate cinematography of Nikkatsu Roman Porno. There is movement in the theater and, as I am soon about to learn, few have come to only watch the movie.

As I glance to my left a middle-aged man has sat down in my row, and the next time I look he has moved even closer. When his hand suddenly reaches for my privates, I dodge to the right and politely tell him that I’m not interested. He gets up and leaves but is soon replaced by another man, the process repeated. A tad uncomfortable, I’m not even sure if the sounds I’m hearing are coming from the screen or elsewhere in the theater. As the film ends, I swiftly leave and head straight back to Benten for a breath of fresh air.

After nearly five decades in business, Okura went through a complete makeover in 2010. The theater was freshened up to meet the comforts of regular movie theaters, partly to attract more female customers. One of them was film producer M (who prefers to be anonymous in this article). Though initially drawn in by Okura’s new look and curious about the films screened, she tells me that her experience was quite similar to mine. “Even though I went there with a male friend, I was soon approached by other men in the audience who couldn’t keep their hands in check,” she says. She hasn’t been back since, and the fact remains that Okura acts more as a pick-up spot (mainly for gay men) than as a place to appreciate good films.

The next day, on the other side of town, I step off the Chuo line in Asagaya to continue my quest. A few blocks away, passing through cozy Showa-flavored alleys, the Laputa theater towers into the sky like the castle in Miyazaki’s film. It resembles the Ghibli museum a few stations away in Mitaka, so it comes as a bit of a surprise that the theater focuses mainly on action films from the ’60s and ’70s and pinku eiga from the same era. Its lobby is full of memorabilia, ranging from Ken Takakura idol cards to Girl Boss Blues t-shirts. It also houses a small cafe, and the atmosphere is a lot more inviting than Okura.

Exterior of Laputa

Exterior of Laputa

I sit down with Yukari Ishii, Laputa’s manager and programmer. My first question, naturally, is why such a cute-looking theater specializes in erotic films and violent action.

“Oh, it’s not Miyazaki’s Laputa. It’s Jonathan Swift’s,” says Ishii, referencing the wilder chapters of Gulliver’s Travels. Of course!

Ishii changed the direction of the theater when she was hired in 2003. A lover of both Toei and Nikkatsu’s quality output, she introduced daily screenings of pinku eiga and Laputa’s audiences soon doubled. There’s even a good mix of old and young visitors, she claims, and a fair share of them are women. Asked what it is about pinku eiga that makes her like it so much, she replies: “They make us feel genki, don’t they?”

I take a seat for a screening of Toei’s 1972 classic Terrifying Girls’ High School: Women’s Violent Classroom. All the lead roles are played by strong females and the film is one hell of a ride, one which few contemporary Japanese directors could recreate (save for the likes of Sono Sion). The theater itself is much smaller than Okura, not as modern in appearance but with a cozy feel. As I look around the audience, I spot two young women and have a chat with them afterwards.

Ueno and Hong

Ueno and Hong

“I loved the fact that even though it was an erotic film the scenes weren’t dirty at all,” says Sumire Ueno, a 24-year-old actress. She adds that today’s experience was a refreshing departure from contemporary Japanese cinema, which relies too heavily on CGI. Her friend Yuni Hong, 23 and also an actress, agrees. They both say they will visit Laputa again.

As I contemplate my own next destination, I learn that the famed Shimbashi Roman Theater was the latest to shut its doors three years ago after having been in business since 1955. Besides Okura and Laputa, Cinema Vera in Shibuya often screens pink films along with its line-up of international independent cinema, as well as two smaller theaters in Jimbocho and Ikebukuro—perhaps on their last breaths as well.

And as to the infamous second floor of Okura? Too curious to leave the mystery unsolved, I decide to walk back to the theater and up the stairs. They lead back inside, to another ticket office. It turns out it’s a special theater with “VIP seats”. I choose to leave. Considering what happened on the first floor, I’m not so sure I want to know what’s going on on the second …

Pink films rolling into Cannes

0

The Cannes Film Festival begins this week, celebrating international film at one of the world’s biggest and brightest festivals.   The event is not only for star studded red carpets and advanced screenings, however.  The Marche du Film becomes the biggest trade hub in the distribution game.  According to the Cannes website, “The Marché du Film is a vital meeting point for 12 400+ industry professionals – including 3 900 producers, 3 300 buyers and distributors and 1 000 festival programmers -, a place to meet peers from around the world and boost your business opportunities.”`

This year, four Pink films will be taking the trip to France as part of Darkside Releasing.  S&M Hunter, Twilight Dinner, The Succulent Succubus, and A Lonely Cow Weeps at Dawn will be shown to other distributors and marketers.  Darkside is a new boutique-style film sales company featuring international genre films.  It’s a big opportunity for more of the world to be exposed to the Japanese pink genre.

Uncovered: Tales of the Naked Theater Part 1 (2016) By Hideo Sakaki

Ageha is a shy girl, who is seeking change and a place where she can indulge her creative side. When she comes across a theater troupe that performs entirely in the nude, she believes she may have found something to bring her out of her shell. She is quickly accepted into the group by the director of the show, Ren. With Ageha taking on the role of a muse, Ren plans a special performance for the troupe in the hopes to grow their popularity and showcase the rising star he sees in Ageha.

The young starlet’s rise is a tough one though, as she clashes with the rest of the crew. With the women trying to bully her out of the troupe because of jealousy and the men being more interested in her body than her acting abilities, Ageha struggles to find her place and her voice. Escalating the drama amongst the troupe, a romance begins to grow between Ren and Ageha. In spite of all the drama, the team still pushes forward to try and make a name for themselves.

The film’s greatest strengths lie within its cast. Every character is given some interesting personality traits which in most pink films would be played just for laughs, and although all the performances are amusing, they have a realistic feel to it that is lacking in a lot of modern day pink films. For me, it is a unique experience to get through a movie and find a smaller bit character to be my favorite. In this case, I enjoyed the slightly neurotic and somewhat frantic costume designer. But all the characters are given good identities, with only one role existing outside of the crew, which feels arbitrarily put in just to get more sex scenes. The film’s ability to bring the troupe alive gives them unique, believable personalities instead of just adding lifeless characters whose sole purpose is to get another sex scene and goes a long way in the enjoyment of this production.

The film does seem to struggle a bit with its own identity, and as far as classifying this in any genre, it does not really have enough elements to comfortably place it under anything but the “Pink Film” banner. The comedy is subtle, the drama is light and the sex scenes are not overly gratuitous or deviant in nature. This may frustrate some viewers who are looking for a more defined and familiar product. Although still conventional in many ways, there are a lot of small touches in the story that makes this a notable film amongst its contemporaries in the genre. Descriptive words such as modern and original seldom appear amongst the current generation of Pink film productions, but this one feels like a progression in the genre and acts as an example that Japanese exploitation productions still have a lot they can offer to their audience.

The film’s conclusion deserves a mention as the shift into it is rather shocking and almost non-sensical. It is uncommon for myself, as a long time viewer of Japanese exploitation films, to be left confounded by a film’s conclusion, as abstract or unorthodox it may seem. Although I am unaware of the reasoning behind the closing sequence, it feels like it was executed in a way to play around with the audience and create a spectacle, much in the spirit of the troupe itself.

With the sequel “Uncovered: Tales of the Naked Theater Part 2” readily available, it should be noted that “Part 1” does work as a stand-alone production, with a definitive conclusion. Tackling a series can, at times, be more daunting than a stand-alone production. Luckily, fans will be able to get full enjoyment out of the product regardless of whether they choose to watch “part 2”.

“Uncovered” sticks well to the tried and true formula of Pink production, but by making a few deviations in and executing them with a well-written script and great cast, it becomes a unique and enjoyable experience amongst the modern entries in the genre.

My Hero Chihiro (2015) By Mototsugu Watanabe

0

Living a life of routine where everything is planned down to the minute, including her sex life, Chihiro begins to grow bored of the regimented life outlined by her husband, causing her to begin an affair with an ex-co-worker. Still holding onto admiration for her husband, Chihiro struggles with her life choices, once believing that the lifestyle of a housewife would bring her happiness, she becomes resentful of her existence and longs for something more from life.

While contemplating her role in society, she curses all of Japan, wishing that it would be destroyed. Unbeknownst to her as she made this wish, God herself was looking for a person who could help restore faith in humanity. God hears Chihiro’s wish and tells her that in order to save all of Japan she must become a famous Idol, a childhood fantasy that Chihiro once held. Under the guidance of God, Chihiro begins training and going out on auditions. Things don’t go as smoothly as planned, with there being little interest shown for her act. As Chihiro’s disappointment grows, she soon finds an opportunity for instant stardom in a deal with the devil, a deal which comes at a great cost. On her quest to stardom, Chihiro must figure out how to save all of Japan, her relationship with her husband and her own soul.

Although there is not heavy emphasis is put on the visuals, the film is well shot and does a good job of capturing the characters’ natural charm. The script, albeit fun, does seem a bit tame compared to previous scripts Motosugu has worked on. It is light on the comedic perversion, and certain characters could have been built up more to garner more interest/entertainment. In particular,  Karin Itsuki in the role of “God” could have had a bit more depth, and injected some humor. For being an all-powerful being she does not really get to do much with it. Overall the film is well written, and although not consistent with the comedy, it succeeds by containing a lot of great gags throughout. I particularly enjoyed the ending, it is far-fetched and comes abruptly, but it is humorous and well executed.

Director Motosugu Watanabe seems to be able to bring out the best in his actors, his female leads are always strong, interesting, endearing and often adorable, and “My Hero Chihiro” is no exception as  Rin Sakuragi gives a great performancein the titular role. The rest of the cast rounds out nicely, with the one exception in the actor playing the Devil, who gives a performance that is a bit too goofy and over the top even for a production like this. Unfortunately, the longer and more graphic sex scenes are those containing the devil, which, if not for the strong female performances would have ruined the erotic aspect of the production. However, I will admit personal bias as men who play into these goofy characters hardly ever appeal to me regardless of genre. I can see others getting more entertainment out of the character.

Motosugu Watanabe’s ability to construct a fun and memorable Pink comedy is second to none. The Pink comedy sub-genre has many great titles, but there are few directors who seem to work so consistently well within it, turning out entertaining productions regularly. His ability to work well with a modest budget, bring out great performances from his actors and work with screenplays that favor his style, ensures that his films are always worth checking out.

With all the praise I can give Watanabe and enjoyable as “My Hero Chihiro” is. It does seem to fall short of some of his other work. Comparing this to his production “Milk the Maid”, which share a similar theme in having a godly being appear amongst a struggling family, the humor is not as consistent, the supporting cast feels under utilized and overall just seems to fall short of what makes his work so memorable. Fans of Watanabe’s previous work will still get a lot of enjoyment out of this production, for those wanting to familiarize themselves with his work “Milk The Maid” or “Sexy Battle Girls” I believe do a better job of showcasing the director’s talent. Overall “My Hero Chihiro” is still a great example of a competent and well executed Pink comedy that fans of the genre will enjoy.
