The Muse (2008) by Yutaka Ikejima

For his 100th film, Yutaka “Mr Pink” Ikejima decided to shoot a movie that functions as a retrospective of his career, in a production that earned him the Best Picture Award by PG magazine’s “Pink Awards”. At the same time, it initiated a fan-based movement of Ikejima followers, known as the “The Muse Syndrome,” making it one of his most significant works.

Takashima is a director, who, as he lies on his deathbed reminisces about his life, through the concept of the “muse” who has the form of a young girl appearing on a beach, while he tries to reach her. His memories are presented in three timeframes: First comes his latest period, when his assistant director has an affair with his wife, a protagonist in his pink films, and is about to abandon him in order to become a director by himself. The second depicts the beginning of his career, when he was trying (largely unsuccessfully) to become a theatre actor and then a pink film actor, again experiencing heartbreak from a woman. The third has him at his prime, when he directed his first film, and explains the presence of the girl on the beach.

Ikejima directs a film about filmmaking, starting with the introduction, which features the words of Samuel Fuller: “Film is a battleground. It is love, hate, violence, action and death. In a word, it is emotion”. The whole story seems to revolve around this phrase, as Takashima is a man that faced too many hardships in order to achieve his goal of becoming a director, and his blights continued until the end of his life. However, the ending of the film actually gives an optimistic perspective, despite the permeating drama that characterizes the production, through the words of Eric Rohmer: “Even if films are harsh, cruel, or full of death, I follow Renoir and believe in optimistic movies.”

“The Muse” also functions as a kind of documentary about the pink film industry, as it presents what happens behind the cameras in with realism. Furthermore, the artistry and the attention given to the cinematography are quite obvious, particularly in the scenes in the beach where Shoji Shimizu implements some impressive long shots, highlighting the beauty of the scenery.

Of course, this is a pink film, and in that fashion, the sex scenes play an important part, although not as significant as in other pink productions, since the focus here is on the general concept of movies. However, almost all of them are quite sensual, and benefit the most by the female actresses, all of which are very sexy and in different styles of appearance. The one where Riri Koda, who plays Takashima’s current wife, gives a hand job to his assistant director, and the ones with Yuria Hidaka, who plays the “Muse” are the ones that stand out.

The acting in general is on a very high level, with Koji Makamura giving a great dramatic performance in the first and last segment, and Naoyuki Chiba in the middle one, highlighting his character’s frustration and determination as young Takashima.

“The Muse” is a great, not just pink, but overall film, which highlights the abilities of the directors in the genre in the most impressive fashion.

Educating Yuna (2005) By Yutaka Ikejima

Yuna is a shy and innocent college student, who has not really had much sexual experience. This changes when she meets one of her idols, Professor Shibuya, a famed art critic, and collector. Yuna is invited to his estate where under his guidance and help from his two other partners, Miho and Erika, Yuna delves into a world of rope bondage and sexual deviancy.

As Yuna’s “education” in the world of S&M continue she begins to fall for the professor, changing from an observer to an active participant in his games, even going as far as to help him scold an editor with sexual humiliation, in an uncommon scene containing male bondage. When her regular life catches up with her Yuna must decide if she wants to stay involved with the professor or try to live an ordinary life in the city.

“Educating Yuna’s” major focus throughout is the erotic subject. As a result, it is hard to give to much comment in technical specs of the production. Mari Yamaguchi, who plays Yuna, does a great job but is limited by the amount of the script dedicated to the sex scenes. In all the erotic scenes, everyone does an adequate job, but for me, as a viewer, I have a tough time complimenting an actor’s ability when presented with a film with so little story. My sentiments carry over to cinematography, I believe it was well shot and have no complaints. However, given the nature of the film, it is hard to criticize as I often look to how well Pink films transition between the story and erotic scenes to determine my thoughts on the cinematography.

My interest in the Pink genre comes mostly from the stories told around the obligatory sex scenes. It is a genre that allows for a lot of freedom for directors to tell unique stories, pulling inspiration from various genres. So when I come across a Pink film that is so heavily focused on the erotic, forgoing storytelling, I tend to find the films rather forgettable, and “Educating Yuna” follows that route. However, for fans of the genre who find the erotic scenes to be the biggest draw, and particularly enjoy S&M themed productions, “Educating Yuna” should be essential viewing. As even with my feigning interest in Pink films of this ilk, I am able to acknowledge that the erotic scenes are very well done, and are a step above that found in a lot of other productions. It is particularly praiseworthy that the film is able to keep away from feeling nasty or mean. In a genre where, unfortunately, it is fairly common to have sex scenes seem a bit forced upon the female characters, “Educating Yuna” is free from the guilt that can come from such sequences.

It should be noted that a sequel for the film will be released in the near future, and although my enjoyment of “Educating Yuna” was somewhat limited, I have enjoyed directors Yutaka Ikejima’s previous work, particularly “The Japanese Wife Next Door” films. I am excited to see what he does with the character of Yuna and hopefully, they can bring a bit more depth to the character.

Pink Eiga: ‘TWILIGHT DINNER’ DVD Review

AZUHIKO leads a normal life until two beautiful sisters move into the apartment next door. He falls for the younger sister, MAYAKO, but not before being seduced by the older sister, TSUKIKO… Soon Kazu has an insatiable hunger that he thinks is sexual, but might be something deeper, darker and more feral…

The story of Twilight Dinner comes from Kyôko Godai, who would later write Yutaka Ikejima’s Japanese Wife Next Door movies. Both of those were wonderfully odd offerings in Pinku cinema. Here, Ikejima wants to tell the story straight. The movie opens with Kazuhiko telling his story to the police officers who are questioning him following the grotesque murder of a local waitress. Through a series of flashbacks he recalls how he meets and falls in love with the two sisters, gets infected and pursues more carnal desires. Though the word Vampire is dropped a couple times in the film that is all that Ikejima’s film has to do with them. The sisters do not like the sunlight yet somehow still have a reflection because everyone should have the opportunity to watch Yumi Yoshiyuki having simulated sex in the reflection of mirrored sunglasses. Thank goodness for ignoring the folklore. But Ikejima was very intent on telling the story that perhaps the scenes may feel a little short/quick.
In regards to erotic content there is ample material to choose from. Kazuhiko does have sex with the sisters and also a waitress at the local drinking establishment. And once he becomes infected with the blood of Tsukiko he has this sexual awakening and he is attracted to anyone. I repeat, anyone. You can go through the deleted scenes to see the removed ‘gay’ scenes. Mayako and Tsukiko share a moment of sisterly love and a toy. As the film nears the end there is an act of cunnilingus which may give you second thoughts the next time you and lady friend have a little alone time. This moment is where the horror element to the story really plays out. Good luck pulling the old, “Ooh, that looks sexy. Lets do that, honey!” afterwards.
I don’t believe there has been a Pink Eiga release this loaded with extra material before. They took full advantage of the visit by Yutaka Ikejima and one of his stars Yumi Yoshiyuki [Tsukiko] when they attended the Boobs and Blood Film Festival in September of 2010. Ikejima even gives a rundown of the story for Twilight Dinner Part 2 – Basket Case if he ever gets to make it.

 

Pink Eiga does its very best to bring Pinku films to North America. The hang up is that they’re not always received in the best condition. As you watch one of the featurettes with Ikejima you will discover that Twilight Dinner was shot, edited, and distributed in less than two weeks. These films are done on slim budgets with enormous… time constraints. The same amount of attention and care is devoted to preserving these titles so sometimes what the lads at Pink Eiga get is not of the greatest quality.Regarding the final gore scene Ikejima was given a choice- there is simply too much blood in that scene, change it or lose the scene. So he looked into changing the color to blue or polarizing the image to keep the scene in the picture. They had to do it so they could release the film in Japan. There isn’t a significant difference in quality of the image now that it has been reverted back to its original format but it is noticeable.
Twilight Dinner wants to achieve the balance of brooding atmospheric horror and sexy erotica. It finds some middle ground between the two.

Ageha is a shy girl, longing for something new to awaken her creative side. After seeing a performance by an eclectic local theater troupe that performs partially nude, she is offered by the director to come and audition for the next show. The rest of the troupe is far from thrilled for the new addition, and Ageha must learn to perform her part well and fit in with her peers, even if that means sleeping with a couple of them. The director of the show, Ren, begins to develop feelings for Ageha, further complicating the situation. Ageha must decide if the sacrifice is worth the reward, and if the sex is good enough not to quit!

In this off-the-wall comedy from Pink Film maestro Mototsugu Watanabe, Chihiro is a bored, unhappy housewife, who is slowly realizing that her life is completely planned out right to the minute. After her husband Toru leaves for work one day, an old co-worker visits Chihiro at home, confessing his love for her and they sleep together. Chihiro is racked with guilt, but admits that it was her boredom that drove her into the arms of another man, and that she wishes that life would simply disappear. Suddenly, God arrives in the form of a cute petite girl in a blue dress. She tells Chihiro that she heard what she said, and that she will make Japan disappear unless she completes this one task: becoming the country's top idol! Unsure but determined, Chihiro sets out to train and audition to become Japan's newest housewife idol. Facing some tough challenges, including an encounter with the Devil, Chihiro discovers along her journey what is truly important in her life. This film also features never-before-seen footage of the Devil and God getting down and freaky.
